Overview

Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Manager contains a path traversal flaw in its web UI file upload handler that allows an authenticated attacker to write or overwrite arbitrary files anywhere on the underlying operating system. Affected versions include specific releases in the 18.4, 19.2, 19.3, and 20.1 lines across all deployment types, including on-premises, cloud-managed, and FedRAMP environments. A low-privileged account with write access is sufficient to exploit this remotely, and a successful attack can lead to privilege escalation to root.

The file upload handler in Catalyst SD-WAN Manager's web UI fails to sanitize the filename or path supplied by the user. This is a classic CWE-22 path traversal condition: when the application constructs a destination path by concatenating a base directory with user-supplied input, an attacker can embed sequences such as '../../../../' to escape the intended upload directory entirely. Because the application does not strip or reject these sequences before writing the file, the attacker controls the final write destination on the OS filesystem, including directories owned by privileged processes.


An attacker with valid credentials carrying at least write access sends a crafted HTTP request to the affected file upload API endpoint, embedding path traversal sequences in the filename parameter to place a file at an arbitrary location. The advisory confirms this technique was used to deploy a malicious WAR file to the WildFly application server's deployment directory, after which the server automatically loaded and executed it. That execution path provides remote code execution and a route to root-level privilege escalation. The SD-WAN Manager web UI must be network-reachable for exploitation to occur.
