Ubiquiti UniFi OS contains a path traversal vulnerability which could allow a malicious actor with access to the network to access files on the underlying system that could be manipulated to access an underlying account.
A path traversal flaw in Ubiquiti UniFi OS allows an unauthenticated attacker with network access to read arbitrary files from the underlying operating system by sending a crafted HTTP request. The files exposed can include credential material sufficient to compromise a system account. The flaw affects a wide range of UniFi OS devices, including Dream Machine, Cloud Gateway, UniFi NVR, CloudKey, and NAS product lines, across firmware versions prior to the fixed releases published in May 2026.
Path traversal vulnerabilities (CWE-22) arise when a web server resolves user-supplied path components without adequately sanitizing encoded traversal sequences before mapping them to filesystem locations. In UniFi OS, the nginx alias configuration for the /app-assets/ endpoint fails to reject or normalize encoded sequences such as ..%2f or %2e%2e in the URL path. Because nginx resolves the alias after URL decoding, a crafted path escapes the intended asset directory and maps to arbitrary locations on the underlying filesystem, exposing files the endpoint was never intended to serve.
An attacker with network access to an affected device sends an unauthenticated HTTP GET request to /app-assets/<svc>/<path> with encoded traversal sequences in the path component. No credentials or prior session are required. The server returns file contents from outside the intended directory, which can include sensitive system files containing credential material. An attacker who obtains those credentials can then authenticate to the device as a system account, achieving full control.
This vulnerability is confirmed as actively exploited in the wild — it is listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog.
